Kaniva hand Roos first defeat
Cold and foggy conditions greeted players and officials at Davis Park in Nhill on Saturday morning for round ten of the Wimmera hockey season, making the conditions just as challenging as the opponents, but this didn’t detract from the standard of play.

By the end of the day, several results had shaken up the competition, with the previously undefeated Dimboola Roos suffering their first loss, the Nhill Rangers enhancing their chances of featuring in the Open finals with a solid victory over the Horsham Hurricanes, and the Warrack Revengers rising to outright leadership on the Under 16 ladder with a win over the Yanac Warriors.
Women
Kaniva breathed new life into the contest at the top of the Women’s competition by scoring a narrow win over the previously undefeated Dimboola Roos. While Kaniva has been comfortably in the top three for most of the season, they have struggled to keep pace with the top two until now.
Dimboola appeared set to continue its dominance when it opened the scoring in the first quarter and looked the stronger team by the first break.
The second quarter was very even, with both teams creating chances, but the defenders at each end rose to the challenge, preventing any further additions to the scoresheet before half time.
A Kaniva field goal in the third sparked both teams to increase the pressure before it rose further in the last after they scored again to take the lead.
Despite some intense hockey, they held on to their lead, inflicting the Roos' first defeat of the season.
Although Kaniva is still eight points behind the joint leaders even with this win, they now know they can match the competition’s best.
The Nhill Thunderbirds established a two-goal buffer in their game against the Horsham Jets in the first quarter, extending it to four by three-quarter time.
While the Jets got one back towards the end of the game, the ‘Birds comfortably won and all but closed the door on the Jets’ ambitions of breaking back into the top four.
Yanac took advantage of the Roos’ loss and returned to the top of the ladder, albeit only by goal difference, with a win over Warracknabeal, setting up a possible showdown for the minor premiership when the top two teams next meet in the penultimate round.
Open
The Yanac Tigers are now clear on top of the Open ladder after a two-goal win over the Warrack Hoops, but they had to work hard to earn it.
These two evenly matched rivals were locked together in battle for more than three quarters before the Tigers broke the deadlock, with Brad Alexander converting a penalty corner well into the last quarter.
A field goal by Simon Farmers with four minutes of play remaining stretched the margin out to two goals.
In a match dominated by strong defence, it was the Tigers’ wider range of scoring options that proved decisive.
Through constant attack, the Tigers earned thirteen penalty corners, and although they only got one past the Hoops’ defence, a conversion rate of just under eight per cent, it was enough to decide the game.
At the other end of the ground, all three of the Hoops’ penalty corners were fended off.
The Nhill Rangers returned to the top four with a win over the Horsham Hurricanes.
A successful penalty stroke taken by Lachie Mills in the second quarter got Nhill onto the scoresheet first, and a
field goal by Jason Reichelt in the third quarter had the home team in control of the match.
Horsham had a chance to peg back the lead later in the third quarter when they earned a penalty stroke, but they were unsuccessful.
The Tigers have now confirmed a place in the finals, and the Hoops only need one more win to also be safe, but the battle between the remaining three teams for the other two places in the finals will be intense over the closing five rounds.
The Kaniva Cobras, who had the bye this weekend, and the Rangers are tied on points and currently
fill the third and fourth spots, respectively, ten behind the second-placed Hoops, with the Hurricanes
still in the chase for a finals berth, just four points adrift.
Under 16
The race for the Under 16 title is still wide open, with just four points separating the top four teams and all capable of challenging one another.
While the Warrack senior teams both met with defeat this week, the Revengers had a better day, with a win over the Yanac Warriors, which has them back on top of the Under 16 ladder, and the Nhill Leopards rose to second after a solid win over the Horsham Bombers.
The Kaniva Raiders maintained their place amongst the leaders with a four-goal win over the Dimboola Kangaroos.
The gap between the top four and the rest is now ten points, which, given the present form, may not be made up, which effectively confirms which teams are likely to play finals, but the challenge is still there for the Kangaroos to stay in contention.
The Bombers will need a very unlikely combination of results to fall their way over the last five rounds if they are to make the finals, but when they play at their best, they can match any opponent and could still significantly influence where the teams above them finish.
