The Wimmera could be thrust further into the agricultural limelight if Murra Warra farmer David Jochinke succeeds in winning leadership of the nation's top farmer group, the National Farmers Federation.

Mr Jochinke, NFF vice-president for about six years and on the board for nine, is a favourite to follow current president Fiona Simson, who plans to stand down in October.

A longtime Victorian Farmers Federation member and former leader, Mr Jochinke has a long list of achievements on which to draw.

He is on GWMWater board, on Grampians Tourism, owner and manager of family farming business A.V. Jochinke and Co, former chair of Wimmera Southern Mallee Regional Partnership and former chair of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

He is also a Nuffield Scholar, attended a leadership course at the Harvard Club of Australia and a rural leadership course at Duchy College in the UK.

Other contenders for the top job are former WA Farmers president Tony York, AgForce chief Georgie Somerset, VFF president Emma Germano, former GrainGrowers Australia chair Brett Hosking and SA farmer Natalie Sommerville.

Mr Jochinke said the group had decided to remain silent on the issue of NFF leadership for a few months but has previously stated desire to step into the top role.
