Hopetoun P-12 wrap up – Week 6 Term 3
By the Community Connections Class

Sports Boost Trips
During Weeks 4 and 5 of Term 3, the Year 7-9 students participated in the sports boost trips, travelling to Horsham to try a new range of activities that our students don’t always get to experience.
On the first trip, the Year 7-9s learnt how to play squash.
Each student was shown how to hit the little rubber ball and given tips on where to hit it.
Everyone was paired up and got to play, hitting the ball in a 4-sided court. Many, if not all, students had stated they loved learning how to play squash.
The second trip down to Horsham was spent learning how to play croquet at the Horsham Croquet Club.
The students were taught how to play croquet and then set off in their small groups to play against one another.
At the end of the two weeks, the students stated that they really enjoyed being able to have the opportunity to learn to play something different to what is usually taught at school but overall, everyone had fun and would definitely recommend it for others to try.
Year 12 English Revision
On the August 28, the Year 12 VCE English students, alongside Miss O’Loghlen and Rex embarked on their last ever excursion with the school as students.
Travelling down to Horsham College for a day full of learning for the VCE English revision session, which was run by Ross Huggard and Ben Taylor.
The day’s presentations involved recapping the key areas of the study design and exam.
The day was split into three sessions: The first was an exam overview; the second was analysing argument, which were both in the hall; while session three was about analytical response to ‘We Have Always Lived in the Castle’, which was presented in the Auditorium.
During this, they learnt tips and tricks to help lead them to success for their exams while learning about common mistakes to avoid.
This was an amazing opportunity for the Year 12s to get ideas and knowledge of what is to come for their upcoming exams next term!
Overall, they all enjoyed this beneficial experience and are grateful for the opportunity.
VM Crop Planting
In the VCE VM class, the students have been busy planting a vetch crop.
A lot of work has gone into preparing the land ready to grow the crop, checking the soil to determine what type of soil it is, as well as ploughing the paddock and getting rid of rubbish and weeds.
The students planted the crop by hand, spreading it as they walked. Vetch takes 4 to 8 months to grow, so they have to be very patient with the process and are hoping the crop will be ready to harvest by late October to the start of November.
The students chose to plant vetch as the land had not had anything planted in it for a while and wanted to help return nutrients to the soil.
This acts as preparation for planting another crop next year, to hopefully give a higher yield.
