In 1986, Warracknabeal received the Wimmera’s first official visit from the then-Governor-General of Australia, Sir Ninian Stephen, and Lady Stephen.

They were greeted at the Warracknabeal Town Hall on Thursday, October 9, with a reception by the Warracknabeal Brass Band and a line-up of uniformed Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies.

Sir Ninian and Lady Stephen visited the Wheatlands Warracknabeal Agricultural Machinery Museum and the Warracknabeal District Hospital and toured the town before attending a civic reception and dinner for about 80 guests at the town hall.

After the dinner, they visited the centenary show where Sir Ninian unveiled a ground stone dais and commemorative plaque marking 100 years for Warracknabeal Agricultural and Pastoral Society.

Sir Ninian Martin Stephen was an English-born Australian judge who served as the 20th Governor-General of Australia, in office from 1982 to 1989.
