Hindmarsh joins regional alliance push
The Hindmarsh Shire Council has joined with five neighbouring councils to form the Wimmera Southern Mallee Alliance, strengthening the region’s advocacy power ahead of a state election year.

Partnering with the Buloke, Horsham, Northern Grampians, West Wimmera and Yarriambiack municipalities, the Hindmarsh Shire Council will work through the alliance to push for lasting investment and coordinated action on housing, transport, workforce development and community wellbeing.
Council leaders say the challenges facing Hindmarsh are shared across the region, including small rate bases, significant infrastructure responsibilities and remote communities.
Yet, the area continues to host major state and federal projects.
By joining forces, the councils aim to present a united front and ensure government initiatives deliver real benefits on the ground.
Hindmarsh Shire Council mayor Ron Ismay said the alliance would give councils a louder and more effective voice.
“As mayor of Hindmarsh Shire Council, I am excited to be working with our neighbouring Councils,” he said.
“Six Councils working together with one voice covering a significant portion of rural Victoria is stronger than individual Councils working alone.
“I look forward to positive outcomes for our community in the areas of housing and infrastructure, including road and rail improvements, especially upgrades to the rail network to keep trucks off our rural local roads.”
Cr Ismay said better transport links, particularly rail upgrades, would directly benefit Hindmarsh by improving freight efficiency and easing pressure on local roads.
Yarriambiack Shire Council mayor Andrew McLean said the alliance will encourage the state government to acknowledge the region’s challenges.
“During this election year, the Alliance has prioritised ensuring that government initiatives leave a meaningful and enduring legacy for rural communities by addressing critical issues such as housing, transport, workforce development, and community wellbeing,” he said.
“The Alliance is urging the state government to acknowledge the unique challenges experienced by small rural councils and to collaborate with them to deliver sustainable improvements across the region.”
HRCC mayor Brian Klowss said that Western Highway is one of the top priorities of the alliance.
“There is a range of priorities, of which the Western Highway is one,” he said.
“Others include Housing availability, Infrastructure limitations, maximising regional benefits from any development that takes place in the region, road network condition, Childcare and workforce shortages, and water security.”
The alliance is calling on the State Government to recognise the distinct challenges faced by small rural councils and to work in partnership to secure outcomes that support long-term growth and liveability in Hindmarsh and across the Wimmera Southern Mallee.
