After five years of planning, fundraising, and construction, the Shed Project (formerly the Boys’ Shed) was officially opened by Cr Kylie Zander, Fr Michael O’Brien, and project participants, who cut the red ribbon together after a brief ceremony.

Cr Zanker said it was a privilege to see the dedication and hard work of many who saw this project to completion.

"This youth shed is so much more than a shed. It’s a place," she said.

"A place where every young person in our community who visits can learn, explore, and be themselves. A place where they can grow confidence, make and foster friendships,  where their ideas are heard, and where their dreams can be discussed.

“The youth shed took several years to unfold, and I would like to offer heartfelt thanks to Rev James, volunteers, and supporters – your dedication and unwavering passion have turned an idea into something real and lasting for youth within Warracknabeal.

"Sheds are built with steel and tin, but this youth shed was built with passion, belief, and community spirit."

Fr Michael O’Brien was representing Bishop Garry Weatherill as part of the Anglican Diocese of Ballarat.

Before blessing the shed, he recalled an emotional story about a priestly mentor in his life who taught him to use tools and created a space for practical experience that had a significant impact on his development as a young boy.

As Cr Zanker added, “To live in and see a community that works to ensure that youth have a space and a place to come together, learn and make life-long friendships is such a wonderful sight, and I thank everyone involved for their vision."

Rev James Wood began the Shed Project in his garage at the Anglican Parish Rectory in 2018.

“This shed is more than just a church activity," he said.

"This shed is more than a good idea. This shed is more than that because of who you (the community) are and the contribution you have made to it.

"Further, it is not about numbers - it is about what happens in the shed when we’re here!”

Rev James welcomed young people to the Shed Project with parental permission on Monday afternoons and every second Thursday during school terms.

While The Shed Project will be closing for the summer very soon, you can contact Rev James for more information regarding places and activities for 2026.
